BirdFest Social

Description:

Sunday, April 17 – 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM    $45

More than just a social!! Our BirdFest Social is being held this year in Vue Haus Home and Gardens that, in 2012 became a Certified Wildlife Habitat. Located on scenic Bayou Liberty the house was designed by noted local architect, Albert Ledner, a former student of Frank Lloyd Wright.  It is named Vue Haus because every room has lots of windows and each has a special vista.

The property has been developed to attract wildlife and the homeowner’s Backyard Life List contains the names of almost 100 different species of birds.  As the birder who owns the home says, “If I knew my water birds better, the list would be a lot longer.”

There are several areas for birding including a large marsh, flower gardens, pine forest and an open grassy meadow which was once home to prize winning miniature horses, though the owners now raise miniature goats and chickens.

The home and property is a destination for private tours by garden clubs and is one of the sites visited during the Audubon Bird Count each December. Dozens of hummingbirds can often be seen at the feeders.  Butterflies flit from flower to flower as they sip nectar and lay their eggs on the special plants provided for them.

But, in addition to the excellent birding, this is our opportunity to relax, visit with fellow birders, sip a little wine or beer, and, because this is South Louisiana where we discuss what to have for lunch while eating breakfast and what to eat for dinner while eating lunch this event naturally centers on good food.

As we have done for the past several years, our volunteers will dig into their personal family recipes and cook up their favorites to tantalize your taste buds.  We don’t know the menu yet, but we are sure to have a great sampling of Louisiana’s very own delicacies such as our special Creole gumbo and jambalaya, maybe an etouffee.  The meal will truly be a special treat for all to enjoy!  And, you can bird from the deck while eating if you like!
